Ok I give my more then two cents worth on Rockstar Super Nova I thought it was about time I offer an opinion of Seperate Ways.. I had the privledge of seeing them perform at the Riverside Ballroom on Sept 8th along with the Band Photograph in a reproduction of the Journey / Def Leppard tour that is happening at this time.. in fact I guess it will be rolling through Green Bay on Oct 25th so that should be cool.. so anyway..
I must admit this was the first time I have ever seen Seperate Ways perform. I have seen Replica numerous times and they have performed Journey songs in thier set but this was my first time seeing Seperate Ways.. I was a little late for the show so I missed a little bit of the show but from the moment I got there I was truely impressed. I thought they sounded awesome.. I made that comment to a couple of people and they were shocked because they thought I wasnt a Journey fan.. but I admire Journey.. they have made some great tunes and I do own at least three Cd's of thiers.. So I am very familiar.. I was really impressed by how close Seperate Ways sounds to Journey.. and that is in every aspect.. vocal wise Paul is an awesome reproduction of Steve Perry.. he could easily have taken over for Steve Perry in my opinion.. music wise they dont miss a beat.. the keyboards were great.. it gave you that Journey thunderous mystique.. drums and bassed grooved and kept perfect timing.. guitar wise.. now let me say this.. and its not because Kelly is my guitar teacher.. Kelly does an awesome job of recreating the Neil Schoen solos.. and I will tell you its just not me thinking that. I know I didnt ask anyone else about the guitar solos but I watched women and men and they actually stood up and strained thier necks when Kelly was playing a solo.. he moved people.. the song I love the most is Who's Crying Now.. Kelly just shreds that solo.. all I can say is that I am a great lover of music.. and at that I moment I was moved.. you definately have a passion for the music and a great feel..
The show was great the crowd was really into it.. an older crowd but you could tell it brought back a flood of good memories for them.. at times I did feel as I was attending a prom but if you feel that at a Journey show the band is doing the right thing.. How can you not help slow dancing with songs like Open Arms and Faithfully.. people rip on these songs but they are Rock Anthems that will hold thier place in music history. All in all a great show.. Journey would have been proud of you guys.. you did justice to thier music.. I will definately check you out again.. and hopefully not miss any of the show next time.. I love Raised on Radio and I would have loved to have heard Girl Can't Help It or Be Good To Yourself..
Let me post one last comment and this is kind of a comparison to Photograph.. I am not out to bash any band so I will hold back any negative criticism of Photograph but I want to give at least a little bit of my honest input.. I feel that Seperate Ways is a much better tribute band of Journey then Photograph was of Def Leppard.. at times Photgraph is very robotic and miss alot of the little things I listen for when I hear someone do a Def Leppard song.. Def Leppard is a hard band to mimic.. but so Is Journey.. you guys in Seperate Ways definately do a better job.. Kelly has told me that he thought the guitarist in Photograph is the best around but I beg to differ.. Kelly you should be looking in the mirror if you want to see the best guitarist around.. Great Job.. and that goes for the rest of the band.. If thier is a next time around for this kind of tribute I feel Seperate Ways should be the headlining band.. enough said.. great show.. you made me crack out the Journey CD's and I most definately will be attending the Def Leppard Journey show on Oct 25th.. this show persuaded me to do so.. good job..
