WOW what a show. I wish these guys would go on a group tour like they do on AI. Every single one of the contestants were phenominal. This top 6 way out talents last years mix. The top two from last year wouldn't make it in this group. No doubt all 6 have great talent...all can easily front a band...but it comes down to who is best for "This Band".
Performance reviews:
First up - Lukas/Lithium - I watched the webisode this week and saw how much he didn't like this song. When he went to meet with the house band he wanted to rearrange it...and they all thought it wasn't going to work. He asked for horns...they scowled and acted shocked. He asked for stops in the beat they again looked at him like he was nuts. They commented that it wouldn't be as good as Dilana's performance. I have to disagree. I think his arrangement was killer. He set it apart from Dilana's version. there is no way to compare the two because Lukas made that song his very own. He sang it great....he performed it great...he made it something he didn't hate. I totally dug it!!!!! Supernova needs to consider this.... If he can do what he did to that song and pull it off like that...well...simply...They need this kind of help with thier music. Lukas always provides me with the tension that I LOVE in music. It's pretty...it's ugly...it's soft...it's in your face all within 2 minutes. I love this rollercoaster ride.
Magni/I Alone - great vocals...He has a good edge to his voice. This song is perfect for him. Another guy that can throw it out there and pull it back smoothly...my only complaint is...he sounds the same with everything he does....and he sounds like so many other singers out there. No real distinction.
This will lower him in my ranking, although I think he did a really good job.
Ryan/Clocks - I agree with Jason that ryan and the piano seem to be a good fit...I disagree with jason on the idea that when Ryan comes out he looks displaced. I thought this was a stellar performance. I hate this song...I am not a Cold Play fan. To me Ryan made it feel more U2. He has that Bono vibe to his voice. I'd put this performance in the top three of the evening.
Storm/Bring Me to Life - I think the band was hard on her. I think she rocked the hell out of this. She showed some vocal stamina she hasn't displayed in the past performances. Remember this girl is not afraid to sing any song and in the past has "taken more than one for the team" with song selection. She is capable of singing just about anything. It's a matter of whether or not she is able to show us the best she's got. My opinion...in the past she hasn't...tonight...she did....and I think she did great. I DO NOT think Toby stole any of her heat.
Toby/Rebel Yell - I don't know why but i cannot connect with this guy. In my opinion he's forgettable...again nothing distinctive. So...to me this was the worst performance of the night. It wasn't that it was bad...the others were just better. Unlike Dave Navarro I didn't believe/buy it. It was just another version of this song that I hear from a good bar band. Not a stand out...not Toby's best....
Dilana/Mother Mother - The intensity was incredible and when she hit those power high notes...Holy Shit!! the raw emotion took it to a whole other level. After such great performances all the way around...What a way to end the night I think this was by far the best performance of the night....and one everyone will remember!!! I hope her fans can get past the drama and take this for what it was....spectacular!!!
My personal ranking for the night
1- Dilana
2- Lukas
3- Ryan
4-Storm
5-Magni
6-Toby
Now who do I think is best for this band and why.
1- Magni - he seems to fit their music style and probably won't go far on his own.
2- Toby - same as above. wouldn't pay to see him
3- Ryan - they need a writer like this...whether or not he could do well on his own is debatable. I'd probably pay a small cover charge to see him...but not full scaled national act ticket prices. Not today anyway. If he keeps improving the rate he has in this competition; anything is possible.
4- Lukas - better off on his own - a star without this band - with the right career choices he has staying power for years to come. He's like a punked out revved up Mick Jagger (cept Lukas can sing).
5- Dilana - better off on her own - a star without this band - with the right career choices she has staying power for years to come. she has the voice/presence legends are made of. She's a new age Janis Joplin.
6 - Storm - doesn't fit the SuperNova music style. She'd be great fronting a pop punk band. This era needs someone like her... a real rocker chick...with an attitude. I am sick of the candy bubble gum music we get to hear from most of the female artists on the charts right now. I think If she hooks up with the right label and manager, Storm could have some hits in the top 40...but I don't see her as an artist people will be talking about 20 years from now. However, I'd pay to see her in concert.
